I’m Back, Sort Of…

Hi, guys!  It’s been a while… This whole motherhood thing is pretty time consuming, to say the least.  I’ve finally been able to get back to some cooking, and I’m hoping to be able to post a bit more regularly.  Before I dive into that though, I thought I’d bring you guys up to speed on how things have been going and what I’ve been up to.

In a word, I’ve been up to Pearl.  If you have kids, you know how insanely consuming being a parent is, especially being a mom, and even more so being a breastfeeding mom.  You think you have an idea of what it will be like, but there just isn’t any way to truly prepare until you’re in it.

Even with the calmest baby you still deal with sleep deprivation, and we didn’t have the calmest baby.  Pearl needed to be held all the time, and you had to stand up, and you had to be moving.  You could sit down in a rocking chair, or you could sit down if she was asleep.  And she had to sleep on you or she’d wake up.  She wouldn’t take a paci, she hated the swing, she hated her stroller and she hated her car seat.  Though having a baby that loves to be held is definitely not the worst thing!

She also seemed to have some sort of food allergy or gastrointestinal issue that we couldn’t figure out.  I was on a difficult elimination diet made even harder by the fact that I was breastfeeding and hungry all the time.  All you want to do in those early days is order food or pop something easy in the over or microwave, and I was having to make food from scratch to accommodate a diet that was totally new to me.  Those were some pretty hard days to say the least!

For over three months I slept with Pearl and woke up about every hour (some nights every forty five minutes or so) to feed her.  Well, I should say she woke me up so she could eat!  We realized at around six months that she’d flipped her eating schedule from day to night, so at that point we pretty much had to do sleep training to flip her back.  Adding solid food to her diet in addition to the sleep training really seemed to turn things around.

Pearl’s eight months old now, and things are totally different these days.  Parenthood feels more like fun and less like work.  I’m constantly in awe of Pearl, and I can’t get over how much I love her.  (What parent hasn’t said that?)  Neither Ryan or I can imagine our lives without her, and all the hard times are worth just one smile from her.

So, in a nutshell, that’s the short version of where I’ve been and why you haven’t seen many new posts in a long while.  When I have time to myself I usually just want to veg out in front of the TV,  read a book or sleep!  As I said though, I’ve been in the kitchen a bit more, and I do have some fun food stuff coming up for you guys.  I’ll do my best to get it out in a timely manner.  Just don’t hold me to it!

  1. What a sweetie! I’m glad things are calming down (a little) for you. :)

  2. She’s gorgeous and I agree with you, things get a way better and easier after 6 months!

“You think you have an idea of what it will be like, but there just isn’t any way to truly prepare until you’re in it.” You’ve said it all.

  3. OMG what a cutie! She looks so much like you! We have a little vegan babe on the way and we’ll be giving her Pearl as a middle name since my dear grandmother with that name recently passed away. Reading about your first year gives me some healthy expectations of what it will be like! :) it would also be fun to hear about the solid foods you are feeding her. Congrats again on such a gorgeous little one and all your hard work.

  4. Thanks, Audrey!

  5. Hi, Glauce! Hope you guys are doing well, and thank you!

  6. Thanks, Valerie! Congrats on your pregnancy! Of course I love the name… I’ll try to do a baby food post at some point, though I haven’t made a ton as of yet. Hope you’re feeling well, and good luck with everything!

  7. I want that baby and some C’est La Vegan peanut butter cookies, please!

  8. Adorable! Have fun with the parenting, she looks like a wonderful baby :)

  9. Pearl is a sweetie pie! I’m glad it’s getting better for you. I remember those days, I didn’t know which way was up I was so exhausted. It’s just going to keep getting easier (sort of), so hang in there!

  10. I was wondering when we were gonna get to see more pics of baby Pearl! She is beautiful.

  11. I am so glad you are back! I have missed your blog posts very much; they always made me hungry. Pearl is beautiful! Many congratulations

  12. Pearl wants me to have some ginger scones while I recuperate. She said she would watch how you make them and when she can reach the counter she will make them for me. Gotta love that little girl.

  13. Congratulations on your new life.
And what truly beautiful people & photos!

  14. Love this – thanks so much for sharing, I’ve been thinking about all three of you! Hope to see you soon!

She’s so beautiful and congratulations! Also, man time flies! It’s been a long time since VVC. =)

  16. Holy moly, I just realized you are in So Cal! I just moved back to Santa Barbara a few weeks ago and I don’t know a single vegan soul here. In Portland, all of my son’s friend’s were vegan and it’s really important to me that he knows other vegan children, so I’m wondering if you know of any vegan parenting/family meetups or groups or activities around here? I’m totally willing to drive. =)

    Aww, hey neighbor!

  17. Hey, Sayward! I don’t know about groups in Santa Barbara, but I can look into it for you. We’ll have to plan a day trip up there soon!

My daughter was exactly the same way. She also had some digestion issues the first 6 months. No allergies, just lots of painful gas. She was also very intense and didn’t like to sleep much. That first year was exhausting! I discovered the term “high needs baby” and Dr Sears’ book on the subject. Wish I had learned about it sooner.

My daughter is 4 now and she is quite the character. She is still very intense and strong willed but a lot easier to manage than when she was a baby.
