Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

It’s been pretty chilly here in the mornings and at night, at least by L.A. standards, and I’ve been trying to keep warm with lots of hot tea and cocoa. My mom used to make a homemade hot cocoa mix that I would drink all winter long back in Chicago.  I need to get the recipe from her (so I can veganize it!), but in the meantime I found some recipes on the Whole Foods site that I printed up years ago and finally got around to trying out this past weekend.

The recipes are very simple to make, especially if you already have vanilla sugar on had, which I did.  It was my first time actually using it, and man, that stuff smells good!  If you don’t have some on hand, you can just follow the recipe as written.  To make this mix vegan I substituted soy milk powder for the dry powdered milk.

I opted to make the spiced version, and while I love cardamom, I found it a little overpowering in this.  I think I’ll add another batch of the basic mix to what I already made, but only add the cinnamon so that the cardamom balances out a bit.  Other than that this is pretty tasty, and it’s so easy to make!  Here’s the version I’d recommend.  You can also half this, but if you’re taking the time to make a batch, why not make a big one?

Spiced Vegan Hot Cocoa Mix

2 cups soy milk powder
1/2 cup good-quality cocoa powder
1 cup vanilla sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
large pinch sea salt

Sift the soy milk powder with the cocoa, cinnamon and cardamom into a medium sized bowl.  Stir in the vanilla sugar and salt.  To make hot cocoa, stir one cup boiling water into 1/4 cup mix (I might try 6 oz. of water next time I make this so it’s tastes more chocolatey).  And for a real treat, add a Sweet n’ Sara vanilla marshmallow on top!

  1. This looks excellent. I might replace the soy with rice milk solids due to avoidance of that ingredient, but otherwise it looks like a good one. :)

  2. looks delicious! Love the mug :) What brand of soy milk powder do you use?

  3. Hey, Hannah S-Q – let me know if you try that. I’d love to try a soy-free version!

  4. Thanks, Kathy! Sawbill is one of our favorite places. I think the brand I used is Giusto’s – I bought a big container from the owner of the bakery where I used to work, and I’m pretty sure that was the brand.

  5. nice! i love that mugh. looks very wintery.

  6. You are the best! Love the recipe and the mug!

  7. Added 1 tsp espresso powder, and 1/2 tsp cayenne. Wow! You can find powdered soy milk at Honeyville Farms.
