Vegan 101: Tempeh Bacon

Bacon, I love you, but you’re bringing me down.

The next installment in my Vegan 101 series is all about one of my past  loves – bacon.  I’d go as far as calling myself a former addict, but these smokey tempeh strips get me through the cravings without having to eat the Babe stuff.  There are a lot of good reasons to not eat bacon, and they all mean more to me than the bacon itself.  For all my bacon-addicted brothers and sisters out there, I want to let you know about what I eat instead, and believe me, when it comes to bacon, I know what I’m talking about here.

  1. aaaaaah that tempeh bacon looks so good! can’t wait for the next video, these are great!

  2. That was so cute! Really well done, too. Good job. :)

(And the high-fat cooking method is my favorite too.)

  3. I LOVE Lightlife’s Fakin Bacon! Now I think I need to go get some more. These videos are so cute and informative! Love them!

  4. Ha! awesome video. now I want tempeh bacon…

  5. Holy jeez, how awesome are you? Too cute.

  6. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

  7. I buy that exact fakin’ bacon every other week to put it my salads. I don’t do anything to it except throw 3 strips in the microwave in the morning while I cut up all my veggies–just to crisp it up a bit. Then I break it up and toss it with the salad. Soooo good!

  8. Hey, Yo Soy Liz – that’s such a great tip! I’ve never tried making it in the microwave – good to know that it’s another option.

  9. Have you tried the “bacon salt”? I have heard it tastes like bacon and the hickory flavor and applewood flavors are both vegan. I have heard that if you sprinkle it and let it sit on eggplant, then fry the eggplant it turns out excellent!

  10. You sound like me – I was addicted to bacon, too! In my pregan days I had at least 5 or 6 slices every morning for breakfast. Ack, my heart! I haven’t found a good substitute yet, and they don’t have tempeh here. But once I find some I know what I’ll be making.

  11. Hi, Nina! I haven’t tried “bacon salt”, but it sounds amazing, especially on eggplant! I’ll keep an eye out for those flavors. Thanks for the tip!

  12. Loved the video! Well done!

  13. You know what, Kim? You are adorable. Seriously. You had me cracking up. So lovely to meet you and hang out this weekend at VVC. Looking forward to doing so again. I hope it’s soon. Give that sweet hubby of yours a hug for me. xo

  14. Thanks, Allison! I loved getting to hang with you too. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see each other again!
